Hornblower first appeared in 1937 in the novel The Happy Return, later released in North America as Beat To Quarters. Yes, a significant but Nevertheless, director Raoul Walsh (They Died with Their Boots On) wonderfully combines the spirit and adventure of Beat to Quarters and Ship of the Line with vivid globe hoping naval action, great ship designs, and some good old sea faring flair. The men, even his officers, don't Beat to quarters and clear for action! Hornblower was played by Gregory Peck in 1951′s Captain Horatio Hornblower. Captain Horatio Hornblower – I feel like I'm going to say too little about this 1951 adaption of the original C.S. If you'd like to read the Hornblower series, I suggest (as I do with the Aubrey/Maturin series) that you start at the beginning. Casual Danger Dialog: The protracted discussion between Bush and another lieutenant in Beat to Quarters, where they academically debate how the Natividad's officers are laying their guns while they are shooting at the Lydia. Any book will stand alone, however, and my personal favorite is Beat to Quarters. In 1807, Captain Horatio Hornblower leads his ship the HMS Lydia on a perilous voyage around Cape Horn and into the Pacific. Forester Hornblower trilogy simply because I want to say so much!
